First Lady of the Revolution

First Lady of the Revolution

Visiting an aunt and uncle in the exotic countryside of Costa Rica, a young southern belle from Alabama accepted a ride on the back of a motorcycle belonging to a local charismatic farmer.

That ride would propel her into history.

First Lady of the Revolution is the remarkable story of Henrietta Boggs, who fell in love with a foreign land and the man destined to transform its identity. Their marriage was a decade-long adventure through political activism, arrest, a harrowing escape and two years in exile. It would culminate in civil war and political upheaval as Jose 'Don Pepe' Figueres led a revolution to liberate his country from a corrupt dictatorship. In 1948, he became President, and ushered in unprecedented reforms, abolishing the army, expanding the vote to women and indigenous populations, guaranteeing education and bringing an enduring democracy to his beloved country. Henrietta Boggs became the first lady of Costa Rica.

While the country would flourish under his leadership, the marriage did not. Now the mother of two, with a husband obsessed with his country, Henrietta felt increasingly isolated and marginalized by the enduring legacy of machismo. Ultimately, their union survived a war, but not peace.

Now, 94 years old, energetic, and active in charities abroad and at home, Henrietta Boggs will narrate this extraordinary story bringing both authenticity and intimacy to the dramatic events of this pivotal era in history.

First Lady of the Revolution is not only a depiction of the momentous struggle to bring democracy to a country, but also a portrayal of how a courageous woman escaped the confines of a traditional, sheltered existence to expand her horizons into a new world, and live a life she never imagined. Stay tuned for updates.
